Bling!

This morning I lost the top disc of my piercing. I'm certain it went down the shower drain. I drove to Dallas this afternoon and bought some bling for my piercing. Now I have some extras in case that ever happens again. The gems are smaller than the discs, but with all the shine they aren't aren't more subtle. So now I'm going BLING!

The Bell Jar

Today I finished reading the Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. I liked it. It seemed a lot more relevant to my life than Cousin Bette. I guess I just connected better to an insane woman than Parisian socialites. I know what it feels like when the cloche has lowered down.

Homemade Marshmallows

I'm not a marshmallow fan, so I'm not sure why I decided to make marshmallows at home. I'm glad I did. I really like them. I even had my first smore! I liked that too. I think I'll be making marshmallows every so often from now on. I got the recipe out of Bon Apetit. Below are some photos of the magical process. Somehow sugar and gelatin and water turn into fluffy whiteness. It doesn't take that long (with the kitchen aid I don't think I had to beat it the full 15 minutes).

Garage Sale and More

This weekend we had a garage sale. Saturday we sold almost all the furniture and a bunch of small stuff. Today, we sold 2 mugs. Oh well, we will donate the leftovers. The clothes didn't really seem interesting to anyone. Our big sale was actually the car. Yep, my first car ever, that little blue Saturn, is gone! I was actually sad to see it go. Ross says he'll buy me a shinier car.

I was glad to get some money for stuff we would have normally donated. The problem is that the house is now a mess. I want to start packing stuff up so that I don't have to look at it laying around everywhere.

The packing hasn't started because I am sick. I spent the afternoon reading and napping. I'm whiny and miserable right now. I think the cold is heading down to my lungs. I'm totally congested, tired, and don't care about anything right now. Since I'm not feeling so great I've gone off the No C diet. It isn't like I was doing so well anyway. I was finding all sorts of sugar to eat. Speaking of C's and sugar--I'm going to have some ice cream.

This is Why

I know this is gross, but this is the reason why I thought I might have a thyroid problem. I let my mom wash my hair again last weekend. She got a little carried away with the scratching--catching my neck and my ear a couple of times. My hair became a nappy matted mess, and big chunks of hair came out when I tried to rinse it out. When it was all over my hair was really clean and soft--and thinned out to boot.

Reality

Between looking at the calendar to fill in things we need to do and looking for a place to live reality has started to sink into my thick skull. I am moving. To Maryland. There, I said it. I'm just getting into the groove at my job (after 6 months), and I'm really going to miss my students. I'm leaving behind my job(s), my friends, my students, my gym membership, and Texas. I'm hoping I just don't leave behind my sanity.

Oh, and uh

Scrubs. I forgot to put scrubs on my list of pet peeves.

Most people who wear scrubs don't need to wear scrubs. Anyone who is remotely involved in the medical business feels that they can and should wear scrubs. This bugs me so much. People think they look professional wearing expandable waistband pajamas around.

Actually, scrubs aren't my pet peeve. What irks me is when people wear them out in public. When I worked in a military hospital it was forbidden to walk into or out of the hospital in scrubs. Scrubs are for the hospital. Scrubs are medical coveralls--they get covered in miscellaneous body fluids. If your scrubs never get body fluids on them--you don't need to wear scrubs. If you have a job where you actually need to wear scrubs, then for gosh sakes, don't wear them out in public! That's just gross. I hate being in a restaurant and somebody walks in wearing scrubs. Even if you wear a gown over your scrubs (i.e. in a surgical suite), stuff still gets on them, and I don't think you should wear them out in public.

I wonder if those people also take their scrubs home and wash them with the rest of their clothes. Eeeew.
